Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer DS 2 featured on a Chinese gaming magazine’s cover.

Knowing my love for all things Shiren, JC told me about this months ago, but I forgot about the magazine and didn’t think to share it with you until just now.

The publication, 掌机迷, apparently bears a close resemblance to Japan’s Famitsu, even employing a similar review system with multiple, brief impressions and numbered scores (EGM used the same system, too).

StW DS 2 picked up a seven, a nine, and an eight out of ten — impressive, considering StW’s poor reception in the States. Playing a hardcore RPG like StW is already difficult enough when it’s a language you understand, so the magazine offers Japanese lessons that help Chinese players better translate the featured imports.

And if that isn’t helpful enough, each ¥9.8 ($1.50) issue also alleviates the need to actually purchase the games by including a disc packed with pirated ROMs. :o/

Anyway, as rad as it is that a magazine actually thought highly enough of StW DS 2 to give the game a cover feature, it’s also a reminder to the rest of us that this game is likely not coming stateside. StW 3, released last June in Japan for Wii, probably won’t ever see an official localization, either.

Very depressing, I know. Here’s a blurry video of an “alternate” ending for the first Shiren the Wanderer DS game to maybe cheer you. The main difference with this clip is that the player somehow managed to complete the main storyline with Oryu and Kechi still alive and in tow, and so they show up in this cutscene.

I don’t think I’ve ever made it past the last “Trial” levels with any of the party members still alive!
